As with fashion, jewellery trends come round again — and the target ring (or double halo) is suddenly everywhere, having first been popular many moons ago. So, what’s its appeal? First, the setting allows a high-impact result because of the way the stones are spread across the finger. The concentric circles of smaller stones combine to make the overall sparkle bigger and brighter, aka more bang for your buck. The target setting also allows for some colour, but for those nervous about not having a central diamond (as tradition dictates) a circle of rubies or sapphires, for instance, gives a bit of character without going too left field. All the big jewellers are now making them and independents too; my favourite is Shimell and Madden, which basically owns this style.
