How it works

We are collaborative by nature. That’s why we enjoy working with clients to create beautiful, bespoke jewellery – whether it’s an engagement ring, wedding band or reworking an heirloom.

Since 2010 we have created one-of-a-kind pieces for clients based all over the globe. The process is simple and transparent, we recognise that the journey of commissioning bespoke jewellery can be daunting. We are always happy to offer advice and guidance to ensure you feel confident and informed.

Every piece we create, whether it's from our ready-to-ship collection, made-to-order designs, or reworked jewel, is handcrafted from start to finish in our London studio. This means that each design can be tailored to your exact preferences, or we can collaborate with you to create a completely bespoke Shimell and Madden piece.

Below, we explain the two most common ways to create a Shimell and Madden piece to your specifications.

Customisation

Ideal for those drawn to a particular style from our collection, customisation allows you to refine it to your requirements. Whether it's selecting an alternative gemstone, a different precious metal, or applying another finish. Gemstone sourcing typically takes 1-2 weeks, with a crafting lead-time of 8-10 weeks for customised pieces.

Fully Bespoke

For those seeking a truly personalised experience, our fully bespoke service begins with a consultation, conducted via email, phone, video call or studio appointment. Once we've outlined your specifications and inspirations, the design journey commences. Gemstone sourcing and design typically span 2-3 weeks, depending on the complexity of the project, with a crafting time of 10-12 weeks.

Things to consider

Customised pieces vary in cost, influenced by the choice of gemstone. However, there's no cost difference between 18ct gold (yellow, white or rose) options or finishes (polished, satin or heavily textured).

Our Fully Bespoke service starts at £3500.

Every consultation, whether at our studio or virtually, is complimentary, along with any designs we draw up for you. We offer two gemstone sourcing searches if needed; for any additional searches, we ask for an £80 deposit, which will be deducted from your order.

With a wide network of trusted and accredited suppliers, we can ensure a variety of options for your consideration. For engagement rings, we recommend durable gemstones like diamond, sapphire, spinel, chrysoberyl and topaz. We readily offer our expert guidance to help you make the perfect choice for your requirements.

We can work with supplied heirloom gemstones or diamonds (once they have undergone checks) and natural diamonds with a GIA certificate. If you are supplying your own gemstones they will need to be hand delivered to our studio.

Upon approval of the gemstone and/or design, we request a 50% deposit. The remaining 50% is due upon completion of the piece, prior to collection or shipping.

Our complimentary shipping service ensures your jewellery piece is fully insured and trackable during transit. Shipping times will vary slightly based on your location, with all duties and taxes covered for international shipments outside the UK.

If we are creating a piece with inherited or supplied gemstone then the final items can only be shipped to a UK address or collected from our studio.

Nearly all our rings are resizable, a detail we'll discuss during your consultation. We offer one free resize within a year of purchase. For international clients, we can assist in locating a local jeweller for resizing if necessary.

My husband commissioned Shimell and Madden to design the most beautiful necklace for my 30th birthday- precious stones to represent each member of our little family in a cluster arrangement. I absolutely love it! It is completely unique, and so meaningful. I have not yet taken it off since receiving it, and have people asking me where it came from almost daily. Will certainly be hoping for more pieces from this amazing jeweller duo!!!
