London Design Biennale Medals : 2018

London Design Biennale Medals : 2018
The 2018 London Design Biennale was devoted to the theme, Emotional States. Taking over the entirety of Somerset House, it will explored big questions and ideas about sustainability, migration, pollution, energy, cities, and social equality.

We had the huge honour of being asked to create the medals for the London Design Biennale.  Each one was handmade from start to finish in our studio using traditional metalworking techniques.  It was a lovely challenge to upscale our design and making to produce these awards for such a special exhibition.

London Design Biennale awarded the four medals to the best contributions from the participating 40 countries, cities and territories.

Along with the installations for the Biennale our medal design incorporated the 2018 theme, Emotional States.  We sought to highlight the mechanics at work when we observe, imitate and reflect facial expressions. We chose to use a mirrored surface in the design to represent this process of emotional identification. Using metal manipulation, we created warped circular shapes, each subtly different so as to echo the intricate and ineffable factors that distinguish us and our emotions.
